Yes! We are banging our own rap in our headphones. We are listening to ‘Original Makoya’ South
African samples and still world class tunes from our home-produced rappers. Like that lonely kid in the woods, we got lost in the American sound but the true Africans in us found a way home.
Our home grown rappers used to refer to money as cheese or bread or dough, the American way but since AKA and Da Les dropped Kontrol, we all about ‘Madibas.’ They brought it back home and still kept the swagger.
The hottest tracks in the land right now are (in no particular order): AKA’S Congratulate, Casper Nyovest’s Doc Shebeleza, K.O’s Caracara, Khuli Chana’s Hape le Hape part 2 and Major League’s The Bizness which features Ricky Rick on the hook and Siya Shezi and Nyovest on verses. All these super joints have South African samples in them and 808 beats that take us back to the kwaito days. Home brewed flavor always tastes better.
These blazing tracks have one thing in common, they all remind you of some old tune that you heard or loved. You know what they say about hit songs, "They all sound alike."
The video quality has also risen to an all-time high all the mentioned singles are complemented by super visuals. To add to the seemingly working retro-vibe wagon, the Caracara vid just makes one want to go to Mamelodi and ride in a Volkswagen Caravelle and go mad. An objective listener will notice that local rappers are taking it back, which in turn means original and authentic. This is an addition of the much needed Mzansi spice flavor that we have longed for.
We are on the verge of Afro-Hiphop here. It includes all the African melodies and the banging bass beats. That we will be getting benefits both ways. This trend stands to unite the old kwaito masters with the new school gang i.e. the Hape le Hape pt.2 track fuses the old Magesh track with the fresh youthful flow of Khuli and the rejuvenated Da Les. That means larger audience, better revenue and quality music for the South African faithful. Think about it!!!
