JOEY BADA$$....NEW SKOOL'S BAD A*S

COOL KID BADA$$
Sipho Ramaru

A couple of years back (2/3 years back) I used to hear people talking about Joey Badass but never really took interest in this name. Now…I remember when I was in my second year in varsity, residing in campus Res and my roommate used to bump Joey Bada$$ almost every day. I liked the tune of the music I heard but never really paid attention to who the artist was, till this one time I asked who the rapper on the joints is because he sounds proper!!!
He was like to me: “eh mfana it’s some dude called Joey Badass, he’s nice”. I still never paid attention but would listen to his music whenever he bumped some. December when we had to go home for school holidays I asked him to upload Joey Badass in my usb so I can listen to him.
I recently started listening and paying attention to Joey Bada$$ and all I can say is; the dude is a badass!!! Finally…a new skoolkat with some old skool flavor. I started following his music and checked his freestyle clips on YouTube, and this young blood is on point.
In October 2012, Joey uploaded a video of himself freestyling to video sharing website YouTube. The video was re-posted on to American hip hop site, World Star Hip Hop and caught the attention of Jonny Shipes who is the president of Cinematic Music Group and manager of Big K.R.I.T & Smoke DZA. After getting hold of Joey on twitter, Shipes later became his manager. Joey released his debut mixtape1999in June 2012 which was followed by Rejex in September, and Summer Knights on July 1, 2013. He is now currently working on his debut album which is set out to be released sometime this year (2014) which will be titled B4.Da.$$.

I personally think Joey Bada$$ is what the game needed to keep the old skool sounds alive through the young general, who don’t always have to rap about money, women and drugs!!! The young fella’s style is freshly baked with some proper beatz and lyrical content that’s on point.

 SKATING AWAY FROM BAD INFLUENCES

By Tshego Mokone

A group of 17 youngsters named The Black Crows are a potential filled skateboarding team from Soshanguve, they started skating as a hobby and a way to refrain from the negative township lifestyle. They have grown in stature and now compete in Pretoria skateboarding competitions such as the Mountain Dew Tour.
Without proper facilities and resources, these teenagers manage to get together daily and practice at Kopanong Station inSoshanguve. Immense effort is being put in by the current squad develop a bigger team of the unpopular sport in order to recruit their peers from the detrimental substance abuse that is witnessed in townships today amongst the youth as well as motivate each other to focus on academics.
“At the moment we use the old taxi rank here in Kopanong to practice. We skate because we are passionate about the sport and for the reason that it helps us to steer away from the bad influences that we can get exposed to while we are not doing anything in our free time.” said ThatoRapoo, a senior of the group.
The Crows have one female member thus far, who calls upon more ladies to join the movement and become active in pre-dominantly male sports such as skating. “The ladies should expect a bit of bruises but it is worth it, being involved in active sports has great benefits such as keeping fit and for my case, improving the level of gender equality within sports.” said LesegoMasango.
Parents embrace the idea of teenagers being exposed to sports because it brings a graet sense of responsibility within the youth. “Sports does not only keep them busy but it also teaches them to be responsible and take care of their bodies as well as staying focused in whatever they do in life.” concluded a parent, Martha Mathabathe from Soshanguve.
The groups continues to recruit young people with interest, as some of the members joined without any knowledge and experience on the board but are now training like professionals.

I THINK MEEK IS KILLING IT!!!

Sipho Ramaru

Artist: Meek Mill
Labels: Dream Chasers, MMG, Warner Bros.

“I used to pray for times like this, to rhyme like this/
So I had to, grind like that to shine like this”
I gotta admit, when I first heard Meek, I just thought he was just another rapper who’s gonna be in the game just to floss and tell us how much money he makes and how he gets women and sh**. Well. . . .He is doing that in a way, but that’s beside the point. Meek Mill has proved himself to be hungry and all about getting his!
The Philadelphian 26 year old rapper, has come a long way to be just a Maybach Music Group spitter. After releasing several self-released mixtapes for free in his early career, Meek released a debut studio album titled Dreams and Nightmare, after securing a recording deal contract with MMG. The album was preceded by singles like “Young and getting it” , “Burn” and the hit single that caused controversy; “Amen” which he kills with October’s very own, aka Young Sweet Jones, aka Drizzy Drake.
“Walk through the hall of a prison, Now it’s the hall of fame/
And people got the nerve to ask why all has changed/
When I was booked, they had me chuckled to the hall of shame”
Meek Mill started his rap career when he was 16 years of age, rolling with them BloodHoundz cats and pushing and releasing four mixtapes (which explains why the dude has mean bars currently), broke and had nothing. Look at the fella now, “Young and Getting It” son!!! Rolling with them MMG cats! Salute to the nigga! He has done well for himself, and also doing quite well in the game.

DID YOU KNOW???

Snoop Dogg was nicknamed "Snoop" by his parents when he was a kid because of his looks.

Doggystyle Album Cover

Classic Album Review

Name: Snoop Doggy Dogg

Title: Doggystyle

Genre: Gangsta, G-Funk, West Coast hip hop

Released: November 23 1993

This is just that one classic G-Funk rap album that took gangsta rap to a whole new level, earning recognition from many music critics as one of the most significant albums of the 90’s. Doggystyle is a debut album from Uncle SNOOP D-O-DOUBL-G, RELEASED IN UNDER Death Row Records in 1993 November 23th. The distinctive sounds of Doggystyle help out in terms of introducing the hip hop style of G-Funk to a mainstream audience, making the genre a dominant force back in the early 90’s. in 2008, the Recording Industry Association of America certified Doggystyle quadruple platinum in sales, and it serves as Snoop Dogg’s highest-selling album.

Doggystyle sold 802 858 copies on its first week of release, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It is without a doubt that Doggystyle is one of the best hip hop classic albums that gave hip hop a new aspect with fresh G-Funk raps.  Doggystyle is associated with Dr. Dre’s The Chronic mainly because each prominently featured Snoop Dogg and because both contain G-Funk style production from Dr. Dre.

Doggystyle was recorded in early 1993 at Death Row Studios. It was produced in a style similar to The Chronic, some critics called it a “carbo copy”. Snoop Dogg collaborated with the game’s under dogs with cats like Daz Dillinger, Tha Dogg Pound and the Lady of Rage. Snoop Dogg was arrested in 1993 August, while recording the album with Dr. Dre in connection the death of Philip Woldermarian, a member of a rival gang who was shot and killed in a gang fight. According to the charges, the rapper’s bodyguard, Mckinley Lee, shot Woldermarian as Snoop Dogg drove the vehicle. Snoop claimed it was self-defense, alleging the victim was stalking him. The charges were cleared in February 1996 when he began working on his second album Tha Doggfather.

The album’s title alludes to the doggystle sex position and is a reference to the musician’s name. The artwork of the album was done by artist; Joe Cool, which represents the themes covered in the album and the style of implementation of those ideas. Now this album right here gets 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 gold starz  from hiphopsplit.
