Title: Doggystyle
Genre: Gangsta, G-Funk, West Coast hip hop
Released: November 23 1993
This is just that one classic G-Funk rap album that took
gangsta rap to a whole new level, earning recognition from many music critics
as one of the most significant albums of the 90’s. Doggystyle is a debut
album from Uncle SNOOP D-O-DOUBL-G, RELEASED IN UNDER Death Row Records in 1993
November 23th. The distinctive sounds of Doggystyle help out in terms of
introducing the hip hop style of G-Funk to a mainstream audience, making the
genre a dominant force back in the early 90’s. in 2008, the Recording Industry
Association of America certified Doggystyle quadruple platinum in
sales, and it serves as Snoop Dogg’s highest-selling album.
Doggystyle sold 802 858 copies on its first week of release,
debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It is without a doubt that Doggystyle
is one of the best hip hop classic albums that gave hip hop a new
aspect with fresh G-Funk raps. Doggystyle is associated with Dr.
Dre’s The Chronic mainly because each prominently featured Snoop Dogg
and because both contain G-Funk style production from Dr. Dre.
Doggystyle was recorded in early 1993 at Death Row Studios. It
was produced in a style similar to The Chronic, some critics called it
a “carbo copy”. Snoop Dogg collaborated with the game’s under dogs with cats
like Daz Dillinger, Tha Dogg Pound and the Lady of Rage. Snoop Dogg was
arrested in 1993 August, while recording the album with Dr. Dre in connection
the death of Philip Woldermarian, a member of a rival gang who was shot and
killed in a gang fight. According to the charges, the rapper’s bodyguard,
Mckinley Lee, shot Woldermarian as Snoop Dogg drove the vehicle. Snoop claimed
it was self-defense, alleging the victim was stalking him. The charges were
cleared in February 1996 when he began working on his second album Tha
Doggfather.
The album’s title alludes to the doggystle sex position and
is a reference to the musician’s name. The artwork of the album was done by
artist; Joe Cool, which represents the themes covered in the album and the
style of implementation of those ideas. Now this album right here gets 1, 2, 3,
4, 5 gold starz from hiphopsplit.
